Ellyllon are a type of land fae known as healers and hedonists who enjoy pain and pleasure in equal measure. They first appear in Late Eclipses.
About[]
Every decade or so, Ellyllon go into a molt where they sleep for a fortnight or so. They crack open their skins and shrug them off, like insects, and end up reborn with a new face. A recent molt can interfere with their magical abilities.[1] Before a molt, you can cut an Ellyllon open or take them apart completely without leaving any lasting damage, and the Ellyllon use this to their advantage: they dissect even themselves to learn more about the workings of the body, making them brilliant and knowledgeable healers.[2]
They are not as strong healers as the Undine, but unlike the Undine, they don't rely on their watery environment or verbal permission to do the healing. Instead, they use charms and potions.[3] They can secrete both stimulants and sedatives through their skin, and they can sing both harm and healing.[4]
They have large gauzy wings, like mayflies, that trail a characteristic dust. Adults are too heavy to fly without using magic.[4]
Ellyllon don't seek titles or positions other than healers. They also don't believe in forever the same way most pureblood do: they believe in change, and they shed their faces, their bodies and their lovers with every molt.[2]
Characters[]
- Jin, a healer in the Duchy of Shadowed Hills
- Galen, a healer in the High Kingdom of the Westlands
- A few members of King Rhys's court
Quotes[]
- "Ellyllon don’t seek titles or thrones or great love stories because we don’t believe in forever. We shed our faces and our lovers every time our skin begins to loosen. We don’t marry. We don’t take positions of more responsibility than chirurgeon. We avoid the stories. It suits us better." - Jin[2]
Mythology[]
The ellyllon (singular: ellyll) are one the five varieties of tylwyth teg, or Welsh fairies. The ellyllon variety are the Welsh version of elves, and are also known simply as "Welsh elves" or "Welsh pygmies" due to their small stature.[5]
