Lily, previously known as Katai Suiyou, is the Lady of the Tea Gardens. She first appears in Rosemary and Rue

About[]

Lily opens her knowe to the weakest, only asking for loyalty. She offers protection, kindness, and a place to belong to those who never had that before. As an Undine, she is tied to her knowe and cannot leave. She is a skilled healer, to the point where she can use foxglove as an anaesthetic without it poisoning the individual she's trying to heal, and extremely beautiful with jade green eyes. When she changes Toby's clothes, she transforms them into a kimono.

Biography[]

Before the Novels[]

Lily and Amandine were once close friends, and Amandine brought her from Japan to America. They had a falling-out when Amandine decided to play faerie bride; Lily disliked the the idea of a life of lies. Lily is still close to Amandine's daughter Toby.[2] Dugan attempted to form an alliance with Lily, however she refused with Marcia standing as witness.

Rosemary and Rue[]

When Toby is turned into a fish and trapped in the Tea Gardens by Simon Torquill, Lily is trapped and forgotten there as well. All of her subjects are dispersed elsewhere with no memory of what they have lost until Toby breaks the enchantment.

Lily heals Toby when Tybalt brings Toby, injured, to the Tea Gardens. Lily sends Ross and Julie to escort Toby to her car, leading to Ross's death. When Toby collapses on Lily's bridge, her blood in the water acts as consent for Lily to keep her alive. Later, when Toby returns needing to reactivate the memories in some blood, Lily makes a tea with the blood and her own waters.

An Artificial Night[]

When Blind Michael begins stealing children, Toby leaves Karen in Lily's care. Lily heals Toby's injured hands and tells her to "ask the moon" for further information about Blind Michael; she cannot give Toby any direct advice. Later, when Toby returns from the Children's Road, Lily restores her to her true age and appearance and then sends Toby on the Tidal Road to the Luidaeg.

Late Eclipses[]

Oleander secretly poisons Lily's pearl as part of a greater plot against Toby, rendering her ill. While ill, Lily makes Toby vow to care for her subjects should she die. Toby is unable to find the source of Lily's illness in time, as Oleander had hid the poisoned pearl anchoring her to her knowe too long for Walther to save her. Just before she dies, Lily tells Toby about Amandine's time as a Faerie Bride. Her pearl is procured by Rayseline and Manuel as "evidence" against Toby.

A Red-Rose Chain[]

Toby remarks that since Lily's death, she has been unable to drink any form of tea without mourning her.

A Killing Frost[]

When Toby trades her way home for Simon's and loses her memories up to Evening's "murder", Walther mentions Lily in passing. Toby is under the impression that Lily is alive, and is confused at the fact that Walther was referring to her in past tense, alluding to an Undine's superior biology if their pearl isn't compromised.
