Piskies are land fae descended from Pixies and Aes Sidhe. They are claimed by Maeve, though are one of the rare few species of fae with no Firstborn. Piskies are first referenced in Rosemary and Rue.

About[]

While Piskies are technically "descendants" of Maeve, their origins are a result of the Aes Sidhe and the pixies crossbreeding with each other, a feat which led to the former's eventual endangered status.[1] Piskies are size-changers who like to steal.[2] It is unknown if changeling piskies can shift their size, though they still secrete pixie-sweat.

Characters[]

Dare Lorimer[]

Dare is one quarter piskie, one quarter Tylwyth Teg, and one half human. She does not demonstrate piskie abilities.[2]

Manuel Lorimer[]

Manuel is one quarter piskie, one quarter Tylwyth Teg, and one half human. He does not demonstrate piskie abilities.[2]

Unnamed Characters[]

  • A piskie girl is among Blind Michael's victims.

Quotes[]

Rosemary and Rue

  • “Pixie-sweat. Some of Devin’s new flunkies had one of the pixie breeds in the woodpile; that was interesting. The Small Folk don’t interbreed much with humans, and their blood tends to run thin when they do.” (Ch. 6)
  • “'[Dare] tasted of Piskie. That made more sense; they were size-changers, after all, as well as being natural thieves, which would naturally have drawn their descendants to a place like Devin’s.” (Ch. 6)

An Artificial Night

  • “A Piskie with webbed hands and legs that tapered to fins straddled his back, her snarled hair tied out of her eyes with a strip of dirty linen [...] The Piskie looked at me, saying, “Oh, you won’t go.” She seemed to be the unofficial spokesperson for the group. Most of the others didn’t say anything more complex than “new girl” without being prompted. “There’s no leaving before it’s time.”” (Ch. 11)
  • “His Piskie companion was nowhere in sight. I was sorry to see that. She’d been as horrible to me as she could, but it wasn’t her fault. A little cruelty didn’t mean she should never get to go home.” (Ch. 29)

The Brightest Fell

  • "[The Luidaeg] waved a hand, indicating Poppy. “This is where [the Aes Sidhe] come from. No Firstborn. Just a pixie and a promise. They’re related to the Piskies, actually—another family line without a true Firstborn. Some Aes Sidhe missed their families, went home to visit, got frisky, and wound up with size-changing babies. I think that may be part of why the Aes Sidhe died out. Why stick to your own kind when your offspring can be something better?”” (Ch. 12)

Mythology[]

  • "The Cornish name piskie was metathesized in Somerset and Devon to pixie and pigsie. Cornish and west of England fairy who haunts hills, rivers, and groves, misleading lonely travellers, thus giving us the English word ‘pixilated’. The older, more genuinely Cornish conception envisages a wizened old man, sometimes in a green suit, who both threshes grain and rides a horse. Elsewhere, the figure may be either sturdy and earthy (in Somerset) or slight, white, and naked (in Devon). Piskies were introduced to English literary tradition by the letters of Ann Elizabeth Bray to Robert Southey."[3]
  • "Generally the piskies are seen as cheerful creatures with a prankish nature. They are said to be helpful but also mischievous, helping the elderly and infirm whilst sometimes leading the more able bodied traveller astray on the lonely moors. Many stories relate to travellers being led into the wild moorland to become hopelessly lost because of the Piskies."[4]
