Puca are a type of winged land fae. They are the only fae who can’t fully conceal themselves with illusions. One first appears in Chimes at Midnight.

About[]

Puca are shapeshifters, but they are unable to shift their wings into hiding. Those trying to blend in with other humanoid fae may hide their wings under their clothes, creating a hunchback appearance.[1] Their wings can be used in love charms[2]

"Titania herself couldn’t weave a spell that would cover Mags’s wings, which were always visible unless she covered them with something."[3]

Characters[]

Magdaleana Brooke[]

Magdalenda "Mags" Brooke is the caretaker of the Library of the Stars and a friend to January O'Leary and Elliot. She provides information to Toby regarding the false Queen of the Mists and about Eira Rosynhwyr.

Mythology[]

Púca are shapeshifters who could take the appearance of horses, goats, cats, dogs, and hares. They might also take humanoid form, but retain animal features such as ears or tail. They are associated with both good and bad fortune, mischief, and luring humans onto their back for a jarring ride. Unlike a Kelpie, which will take its rider and dive into the nearest stream or lake to drown and devour him/her, the púca will do its rider no real harm.

Phooka

Traditional depiction of a Puca

Some myths have the puca intervening before a terrible accident or before a person is about to happen upon a malevolent fairy or spirit. In several of the regional variants of the stories where the púca is acting as a guardian, the púca identifies itself to the bewildered human. The púca has the power of human speech, and has been known to give advice and lead people away from harm. Though the púca enjoys confusing and often terrifying humans, it is considered to be benevolent.

The púca is a creature of the mountains and hills, and in those regions there are stories of it appearing on Samhain and providing prophecies and warnings to those who consult it.

The Shakespeare character Puck is based on the puca.
